Abstract:The concepts ofcritical thinking should be considered crucial in this rapidly developed era.This paper provides the results of a study in which 42 EFL learners areencouraged to demonstrate their critical thinking skills through individualanswers to the questionnaire and test. The participants are between 19-20 ofage, both male and female.

For the purposes of this study, questionnaire andtest items proposed by Cottrell (2011) are used as instrument. These areintermediate learners of EFL in a classroom context in Indonesia with anadequate command ofEnglish ability. This study reveals that most of them tend to have a positiveattitude (3 or 4 in a 0-4 answer scale), including some key questions oncritical thinking. Forexample,as many as 52.4% of the respondent say they are able to identify unfairtechniques used to persuade readers and are good at reading between lines,57.1% say they certainly will do a further research if they are not sure aboutsomething they read and 47.6% say they know how to evaluate source material.

Paper ini memaparkan hasil penelitian terhadap 42 pemelajarbahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing mengenai kemampuan berpikir kritis merekayang direpresentasikan melalui jawaban individual mereka atas kuesioner dan tes.Participan penelitian kecil ini berusia 19-20 tahun, laki-laki dan perempuan.Kuesioner dan tes diadaptasi dari Cottrell (2011). Mereka adalah pemelajartingkat menengah di Indonesia dengan penguasaan bahasa Inggris yang cukup baik.

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan sebagian besar dari mereka cenderung memilikisikap positif (3 atau 4 dalam skala 0-4), termasuk beberapa pertanyaan kunci diantaranya. Sebanyak 52.4% dari responden mengatakan bahwa mereka bisamengidentifikasi teknik tidak baik yang dipergunakan untuk membujuk pembaca danbahwa mereka mampu membaca pesan yang tersirat, 57.1% mengatakan bahwa merekapasti akan mencari informasi lebih lanjut jika kurang memahami materi yangdibacanya dan 47.6% mengatakan bahwa mereka mengetahui cara mengevaluasi sumbersebuah wacana. Penelitian ini berfokus pada kemampuan membaca, namun denganmenyempurnaan lebih lanjut diharapkan juga menyentuh kemmapuan lain sepertimenulis.

It covers: critical thinking and problem solving,communication and collaboration, creativity and innovation. Beyond meeting thenew demands of 21st century work, these skills have long been at the heart ofwhat it takes to become a self-reliant lifelong learner. The ability to ask andanswer important questions, to critically review what others say about asubject, to pose and solve problems, to communicate and work with others inlearning, and to create new knowledge and innovations that help build a betterworld—these have always been at the core of learning and innovation (Trillingand Fadel, 2009)Critical thinking,as one of those 21st learning skills, refers to the individuals’ ability tothink and make a decision independently considering any possible facets. Inthis demanding era of critical skill, enhancing learners’ critical thinking isconsidered one of the teachers’ crucial tasks, including foreign languageteachers, due to their students’ high exposure on the new media. The world isborderless and the possibility of reading anything online written in English isunavoidable.  Teaching criticalreading skills develops learners to be critical thinkers. This does not onlyprepare them to be better critical readers in schools but also produce betterschool leavers who could survive in the real world (Abd Kadir, et al, 2014).

They live with the fact that those online discourses are there in theirpersonal, social and professional life. Criticalthinking skill surely is one of the skills required to survive in thisdigital time. The tight, worldwide competition in this era requires people tohave the skill to innovate ideas in technology, to increase educational qualityand to produce outstanding human resources. It is a skill that brings precisionto the way someone thinks and works to be more accurate and specific in notingwhat is relevant and what is not.

Having this skill is helpful
