Certain charactershave been changed in the movie. Their personality, looks, and behavior havebeen changed. Before describing these differences, between the book and themovie, it is important to know, that the perception of a character, in thebook, is very subjective due to the reader’s imagination and expectation to thecharacter. In the movie, the dragon Smaug is truly terrifying. Smaug is shownas a gigantic, evil, and careless beast that makes any viewer hold theirbreath. But in the book, Smaug is not described near as frightening as in thefilm.
I personally think, that the reason why Peter Jackson chose to make Smaugeven more terrifying, is because of the viewer’s expectations. The gradualbuild-up through the movies has raised the viewers fear of Smaug. It also seemslike that Smaug has a greater role in the movie than in the book. Smug appearsin a lot of scene in the movie but only in a few chapters in the book. If you havewatched the movie and read the book, you will notice that the story has beenmodified. In the first movie, after fighting the trolls, Gandalf finds a bunchof weapons inside the troll´s cave.
Gandalf is the one giving Bilbo his knife. But in the book, Bilbo is the one that finds this blade. He also, later in thebook, names this blade after killing a giant spider. He does not do that in thebook. This is just an example of some of the smaller changes in the story, butit is not only minor changes. One of the major ones is the romance between theelf Tauriel and the dwarf Kili.
This part of the story is made up and notincluded in the book. It is a common thing, in the movie industry, that romancesells. Mabey this love story was added to the movie because of sale reasons, orto include the strong female elf character. Not only parts of the story arechanged, but the perspective of the story is changed as well. In the movie, thestory is told from Bilbo´s perspective.
In the book, the story is told by anomniscient author. This has a huge impact on the way the reader or the viewerpercept the story. If told by a narrator, the story seems like something thathas happened in the past. If told from the perspective of the main character, the story seems more present. The feeling of the present adds a more dramaticand empathetic effect to the story.
