Child abuse is an issue in society that needs a great amount of attention because it affects a large population. Many children in the state of Ohio specifically are abused, neglected, or witness violence at home. There are many symptoms from being abused as a child. There are many statistics on child abuse that shows how serious it has become. There are many kids who are abused every year, and they are affected daily by the what they have had to suffer through. “Around 78,000 people are abused in Ohio every year.” “Each year in Ohio, child protective service agencies across the state substantiate more than 30,000 cases of child abuse and neglect. More than 65,000 women were abused by an intimate partner in home. Also, more than 48,000 kids witnessed this type of violence” (Zeltner). That means that mostly women are abused and more than half of those kids see their mom being abused. For example, this happened in the novel Forged by Fire by Sharon Draper, when the main characters (Gerald and Angel) saw their father, Jordan, hit their mother, Monique, across the face and then Monigue started crying with blood dripping down her chin. Childs abuse can cause many symptoms. From physical abuse children can get bruises, burns, fractures, abdominal or head injuries. For example, Gerald from Forged by Fire was slapped a lot when he was a kid and he would always have bruises. From sexual abuse, children may have nightmares, depression, unusual fears, and may even attempt to run away. For example, Angel in Forged By Fire got molested many times and she was having nightmares often. Another set of symptoms are from emotional abuse, because when a child is being abused emotionally, people will see a sudden change in their self-confidence and willingness to live. Examples include headaches or stomachaches with no medical cause; abnormal fears increased nightmares or attempts to run away (Psychology Today). There are a lot of horrible statistics about child abuse. First, “in 2013, 27,562 children were victims of abuse or neglect in Ohio” and those kids are very similar to Gerald. “This is a rate of 10.4 per 1,000 children, representing a 6.1% decrease from 2012. Of these children, 48.3% were neglected, 43.2% were physically abused, and 18.8% were sexually abused. In 2013, 48 children in Ohio died as a result of abuse or neglect. Also, in 2013 Ohio had 166,583 total referrals for child abused and neglected” (State Fact Sheet). There is a large amount of our population that are abused as a child. Also, many people are affected daily by the what they have had to suffer through. Being that there are such high statistics in child abuse, it is a problem. I think that the kids that are abused should get the help they need because it is a lot for them to go through. There should be more people that are trained to notice whether there are symptoms from a child that they have been abused or are being abused. As a society we need to help these children and be advocates for them.
