Shared knowledge is highly structured and systematic which is the product Of more than just one individual; it is the idea that people within a particular immunity share the same belief and act correspondingly to the norms. It can be derived from social and cultural norms, beliefs, religions and such. Personal knowledge merely focuses on an individual’s own knowledge. This can be obtained from cognitive processing; personal experiences and schemas.
In the area of Human Sciences, famous theorists and empirical researchers in the psychological world provide research to show that one’s knowledge mostly originates from the external environment. It can be assumed that if personal knowledge was shaped from shared knowledge then that would mean that all of humanity would have the same personal knowledge. However, in The Arts, the interpretations of art varies in many different people. Some may find a painting beautiful whereas another does not.
In addition, in psychological experiments, findings tend to show a variety of results because the participants may have a different view on particular things, thus there is rarely 100%. Also, this is also one of the reasons why psychological scientists cannot ‘prove’ anything, only suggest because of the range of external factors that influence one’s cognitive process. If humanity were to depend only upon shared knowledge, would there be personal knowledge? From a Psychology perspective, a great number of psychological studies have strongly suggested by providing convincing evidence that shared knowledge can shape personal knowledge.
Psychologists and researchers such like: Bandeau (1977) , Hoofs- 2 deed (1984), Situations (2006) have supported the socio cultural level of analysis principle which States that the social and cultural environment influences behavior. On a daily basis, we can see people exerting great influences on our feelings and the ways we think. This influence that others may have on us can change our perspective about the world; to help us see wings in a different way, whether we perceive these influences directly or indirectly. For instance, a direct influence may be when somebody asks that you behave in a certain way.
Indirect influence can be seen when people conform to societal norms. In this case, stereotypes made up in our mind consistently influence us on a daily basis and we often do not realism that these socially derived structures affect us. Moreover, Visigoths theory of social development explored how social interaction, language and culture is a major influence on a child’s upbringing; how the child makes sense of the oral through shared meaning with others. This study demonstrates that young children who have no real understanding of the world yet and who are still discovering new things, are learning through their external environment and acting upon a social norm. For the children’s perspective, they perceived the aggressive behavior to be of normal behavior, thus they imitated the adults. 3 Social norms are a major factor, as they set the foundation to the proper way of doing things and society is expected to follow those norms as they may rive from traditional roots.
Norms give us a normality to go by which are seen as a public opinion or just the way things are in a particular society. Hypotheses pioneering research focused on the cultural dimensions of behavior. People that come from a specific cultural dimension act in a way that is seen as socially acceptable in that dimension. For example in collectivist societies, people in that society give much more significance to the goals of important groups such like families and see themselves as a member of that group, not as an individual. People in this society priorities working gather with other people rather than individual achievement.
In these collectivist societies, shared knowledge is seen to shape personal knowledge. In The Arts world, the interpretations of Art vary from person to person. For example, a group of people may look at a painting and everybody’s interpretation of this piece of artwork is different. How? Art has an amazing way of letting everybody interpret it in their own way; mostly their interpretations derive from past personal experiences or struggles. Every body’s life is different and we all go through different struggles, thus we end p having different interpretations in many things in our lives.
This concludes that shared knowledge in some cases may not shape personal knowledge because individuals create their own personal knowledge through their own experiences and struggles in their own life. As every human experiences different challenges, everyone creates their own personal knowledge. Also, technology and social media have a major impact on society’s knowledge. Due to the fact that nowadays, people are hooked onto their technology devices, social media has a very big impact in their lives.
Being exposed to so much information, this 4 information can change our perceptions about the world and make us see things in a different lens with the use of emotive language in advertisements. As part of The Arts, how beauty is expressed in social media is very influential, especially to women. For example, Victoria Secret Fashion Show is mostly aimed at women. It can enforce a negative feeling to all viewers; that all women who are considered beautiful are very slim, they have long shiny legs, etc. These are the psychological impacts that technology and social media can eve on an individual.
This shared belief that women are only perceived as beautiful if they own these qualities definitely impacts women personal knowledge. This may also be harmful in many ways, resulting to teenage girls developing health problems such as bulimia, anorexia: in order to achieve the “social norm” that is created in the society. Of course, a cause and effect relationship cannot be scientifically proven and these health disorders can derive from many different reasons, however this shared knowledge about women does shape women’s personal knowledge about themselves.
