Cultural beliefs

Cultural “Beliefs” Corrupts Society In this society, everyone is being Judged for the way they look, act, or their beliefs. There is always a certain way to “look” to fit in with people. That’s where ethnocentrism takes over. Ethnocentrism is the belief in the inherit superiority of one’s own ethnic group or culture (Dictionary. Com). It is passing negative moral judgments on how ethnic others organize their lives. It is a destructive attitude where it tears people apart and changes people to who they are not ought to be. We have heard of many superior rulers who actually corrupt the society, because it does to fit the rulers’ standards.

As some culture have their ethnocentrism leader, who makes every decision. The people under the ruling have no freedom for who they want to be. They have to be what the leaders describe to be classified as “perfection”. Having unlimited ruling power leads to a corrupted world. Doll Hitler was the leader of the Nazi Germany from 1934 to 1945. During his ruling, he oversaw fascist policies that resulted millions of deaths. Hitler and his Nazi followers thought they were better than the Jewish people, as well as other group of people, and had many innocent people slaughtered in concentration camp (Sinatra).

He gave no knowledge to anyone who wasn’t a Nazi follower. He Judged other groups to be lower than dirt not only did Hitler have hatred towards Jewish, he was racial against certain hygiene. Hitler only favored blonde hair blue eye people. Anyone else had to be sent to concentration camp, and sooner or later died (biography. Com). Because of his ethnocentric ways of ruling, it led to a terrifying death of between eleven to fourteen million innocent people, that’s including the six million Jewish people’s death (Sinatra).

Zorn Neal Harpoon’s literature, “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, is another great example of an inherit superior of one’s ethnic group or culture. In Harpoon’s novel, Jeanie Mae Crawford, the protagonist, was a light skin black lady who had the appearance of a Caucasian (Sparseness). She had dated and married many dark skin men, but it never really worked out. Mrs… Turner, who is a resident nearby and owns a restaurant wanted to introduce Jeanie her brother that was light skin as well. Mrs… Turner prides herself on her Caucasian features and disdains anyone with a more ark skin appearance.

She never understood why Jeanie would be into anyone that was so dark. Jeanie never agreed with the way Mrs… Turner thinks. Mrs… Turner despised dark skin folks and always blamed them for the way people get along. Jeanie would always tries to tune Mrs… Turner as she always preached that, “if it wasn’t for so many black folks it wouldn’t be no race problem,” (Hurst 141). No matter what, Mrs… Turner will not accept the cultural differences. Because of her point of view is determined, it corrupts the society, breaking people apart instead of bringing them together.

Not only is racism or a dictator ruler are part of ethnocentrism, but so is religion. Everyone believes in a certain type of God, or not even at all. Everyone is Judged for what they believe in. For example, if a certain person believes in God, it means they People are stereotyping others for what they think they are, and not for who others really are. For instance, when coming upon an Simian’s religion, people come to a straight conclusion that the Asians are Buddhist. Yes, mainly only Asians believe in Buddhist, but there are majority who believe in God, and that are Catholics.

How does ethnocentrism come along to this point of view? It causes people to misjudge others for who they really are, because of their ethic culture Therefore, ethnocentrism leads society to a corruption. It leads us to make premature Judgments. As quoted by Eleanor Roosevelt “Pit race against race, religion against religion, prejudice against prejudice. Divide and conquer! We must not let that happen here,” is a statement that everyone could agree on. If everyone could just get along, and not use the excuse of others’ culture to have hatred between other, this society would be successfully peaceful.
