To find out whether any program has been successful or not it is extremely important to evaluate it. It has been rightly mentioned in the power point that effectiveness and efficiency are the main ways through which the success of a program can be judged.

Suppose a program has been implemented to improve cleanliness in the various wards of a hospital by training the cleaning staff in how to maintain hygiene 24/7. If at the end of the training it is found that there has been no positive changes as far as cleanliness is concerned that means the training program has not been effective.

Since the efficiency level of the staff that was trained under the program did not improve, it means the program has not given the desired results.

Some programs are time taking, some are less time taking, some are complex, some are simple but irrespective of a program’s characteristics, there are three steps that are part of each and every program. As mentioned in the power point, they are – planning, implementation and evaluation.

Planning is extremely important otherwise the whole program would go haywire. Implementation is of course the most important phase as it the soul of the whole program. Whereas, without evaluation it is impossible to judge the success of a program.

 When different programs have different characteristics, naturally they cannot be evaluated in the same manner. Hence the three major types of evaluation mentioned in the power point would do justice to each kind of program.

Though research and evaluation look similar and share some of the characteristics, they are different in nature. Research facilitates knowing the unknown whereas the purpose of evaluation is to extract the results of something that has been implemented.

Evaluation is totally based on the implemented program. One who is carrying the evaluation cannot deviate from the program’s objectives. Whereas the person carrying research has full freedom to carry his study in whichever direction he desires. Evaluation ends with the measurement of the effectiveness and efficiency of a program. However there is no limit to research. It is endless.

Based on the nature of evaluation there are different variables too, to enhance the success of the evaluation process. An evaluator cannot apply same variable in all situations. Every situation or in other words every program has its own requirements.

The timing should be adjusted according to the objectives of the program. All programs have different objectives. Hence the timing of the evaluation process should be adjusted on the basis of the objectives one wants to achieve and also on the basis of the nature of the program.

 To evaluate a program means gathering full information about the successful implementation of the program. Gathering full information means using different ways or in other words different kinds of data collection sources to achieve maximum results.

To conclude there are different types of program but irrespective of their characteristics they follow three common steps like planning, implementation and evaluation.

The similarity ends here. The choice of variables, the timing, the sources of data collection etc. all varies from program to program according to the characteristics of the program that is being implemented.
