Has the internet effected are minds? What exactly is the internet? The internet is a global network made up of thousands of small networks which all lies in the technology branch. Imagine thousands or even millions of computers linked up sending messages and exchanging information to each other around the world. The Internet has made information available to computer users with Just a simple click of the mouse but wait, Is it making us dumber?
As in Mark Barbarian’s essay, The Dumbest Generation,” I say I have to agree with his opinion on how the internet is making my generation less active because of how we are so addicted to technology. Look at us now, you usually don’t see people running around playing games or going for visits to peoples houses to say hello. They are usually stuck on the internet through their phones, computers, pads, etc. The phrase, “You click too much, read too little, and remember even less,” is very true.
When looking at the history of communication and how information and knowledge has been transferred and passed on through the ages, the internet has truly revolutionized everything beyond our ability to control it or ourselves. For example, I think that people specialize their knowledge and studies more than previous generations. It looks like we know less about things like government and politics because that is something that used to be one of the things everybody studied. But a problem that I think has been caused by technology and the Internet is a big decrease in spending time with each other.
When we had something we wanted to talk about or when we wanted to play a game, we used to call each other on the phone or set up a time to come over and play basketball or anything else physical. But now, people Just post it on Backbone and instead of inviting each other over to play a game people Just go online and play against some random stranger, which I think takes away from the enjoyable social aspect of it. Or many people don’t play board games anymore at all, they Just go turn on their Oxbow and compete against some random stranger in a video game.
We won’t even go outside to play sports, we use WI! As said in the essay by Mike, “The problem is that instead of using the Web to learn about the wide world, young people instead mostly use it to gossip about each other and follow pop culture, relentlessly keeping up with the ever-shifting lingua franca of being cool in school. ” (1) This is true about ids, they tend to not learn through the internet but mostly use it as their social networking. In other words looking at it from another perspective though, I feel that it may not be that the internet is making us stupid but making us more demanding.
Before the internet people were given a limited number of topics that we could review from a newspaper, television, magazine etc. Since they were limited in scope they needed a greater amount of depth and description. However now that we can delve a wider range of topics there is no need for such depth. In fact if a person was o spend as much time on any given topic today as was 50 years ago or more it would be hard to stay up to date on the numerous happenings that are going on.
No longer are people simply expected to know what is going on in their home town on a day to day basis, but all the important events of the modern world. The Internet undoubtedly is an inviting meal, attracting people to taste and feel. Yet, when you are heard everyday. No one expects to live in a world full of insecurity, afraid of confronting with loss every moment. But the Internet may be such a world. Our minds may also be haunted with the issues of copyright and illegal download. We want to find a better way to solve the problem, yet up till now, it remains serious.
Children of younger ages can have access to the Internet nowadays than before. It raises the worry from parent’s that their children might be addicted to the virtual reality, for example, being indulged in online games and chat or so. And to some degree, the Internet separates people from those who are beside them in daily life, the relatives, friends or colleagues. People seem to prefer the connection online rather than with the acquaintances around. Further more, people have often debate whether internet is good or bad.
Many people believe that internet can only cause harm to their lives and to the society, while many others strongly defend the technologies which have made their lives much more leisurely and enriching than it could have been with the absence of the internet. So are the effects of the Internet positive or negative? Take a side and argue the case. The effect of the implementation of internet use is positive because information on the internet is infinite to all users. The effect of the internet is also negative because the immediacy of the excess of information reduces accuracy and truthfulness.
The internet to me is meeting really good to have because the internet is well on used for good things that advance the human mind and help bring people together it is a drastically better than an age without the internet. Of course with the internet all the information in the world is at your finger tips. The hard part is finding credible sites to give you correct information and guide your knowledge in the right direction. In my opinion, both of these views are correct to an extent, but I also believe that what should be examined is not whether technology in its self is good or bad, but rather how we decide use it.
