MicrosoftMicrosoft is one of the largest and most successful companies in their market and the world. Their products are extremely popular, with their customer count being in the billions. Microsoft is a technology company, and their main focuses include developing and producing electronics, computers, and software products. They have a variety of products, ranging from the Xbox video game console, to different operating systems and programs including Windows 10 and Microsoft office suite. Apple and Google are two of Microsoft’s main competitors ever since all three companies started up. Microsoft, which was co-founded by Bill Gates and Paul G. Allen, was officially founded on april 4, 1975. However, Microsoft was only offering private services for about eleven years before they went public and openly sold their product. One of the main reasons that Microsoft took so long to go public was because firstly, Computers were still relatively new to the market. The process of going public is relatively expensive and somewhat risky. The final reason is that it took a lot of time for Microsoft to find all of the right people for their jobs, and create many of the policies and plans for their startup. Three different business attributes that Microsoft, like all companies, have is their social responsibilities to all of society, their employee training and evaluation, and their global market expansion and tactics. All three of these topics are implemented into Microsoft in their own unique way, organizing, changing, and expanding Microsoft in distinctive ways. Microsoft is always growing, which expands and develops the different branches and traits of Microsoft. Microsoft always finds a way to portray its responsibility and ethics in society. It is also very important for Microsoft to represent themselves in a positive way because of the prodigiousness of the company. The globalization and success of Microsoft also hold the company to a high standard of leadership, quality, initiative, and safety. One duty that Microsoft has to fulfill is its social responsibilities. A business’s social responsibility is their attentiveness and consideration of society’s well-being and their consumers satisfaction. There are four social responsibilities, all of which have their own process and properties. The four social responsibilities are, responsibilities to the General Public, responsibilities to the customers, responsibilities to Investors and the Financial community, and responsibilities to the employees. First, the responsibilities to the general public consist of dealing with public health issues, protecting the environment, and developing the quality of the workforce. Microsoft covers all of these, but most specifically protecting the environment. Since Microsoft deals mostly with electronics they tend to use a lot of electricity. As society advances and technology improves there is going to be many more ways to efficiently use green energy sources to a their advantage. In 2013, Microsoft decided it would be best off if they became carbon neutral. In order to fulfill this goal, they signed a contract for twenty years with a wind farm providing wind energy to Microsoft. This will help diminish, and/or eliminate the use of carbon in Microsoft, and will also set an example for other electronic companies. Next, Microsoft’s responsibilities to the customers include four different rights; The right to be safe, the right to be informed, the right to choose, and the right to be heard. Microsoft exploits all of these rights, and the first one being the right to be safe. Ever since computers started to be a global product with many people having one, computer viruses came along with it. Microsoft has their own computer software to protect their users and customers from viruses, and it’s called windows defender. It is not only very reliable and user friendly, but the software is always being updated, and new features are always being added. It may be a basic form of computer protection, and weak compared to more expensive alternatives, but it is enough to get a user the protection they need with an easy to function interface. Next up is how Microsoft informs their customers. This is very broad because most other companies do these things, but microsoft is very active on social media and is always updating their customers on new products, the company itself, and other things that may interest their buyers. They also have a newsletter subscription where a customer can receive information via email about special offers, promotions, and other small things to keep customers up to date. Third, the right to choose is very easily shown by Microsoft in two ways. One way is that Microsoft will not force you to buy a product, they may advertise but they leave the option of whether to buy it or not up to you. The other way is that Microsoft has so many options for buyers that customers can pick from a variety of choices and not feel forced by Microsoft into obtaining any of them. The final right is the right to be heard. Microsoft does this in many effective ways because they know they will get more sales if the customer gets what they want. Microsoft has open votes on ideas, giving customers the power to feel like they are closer to the c0mpany. Microsoft also has active surveys, and this will help tailor different parts of the company to the customers wants and needs. The final social responsibility that microsoft has is their responsibility to their employees. This consists of many topics, including safety, quality-of-life, discrimination, and harassment in the workplace. Workplace safety is a necessity for Microsoft and its employees. A lot of workplace safety has to do with keeping work areas neat, secure, and non-harming. Microsoft’s workplace is very organized, this helps make fire hazards and other easily avoidable threats to one’s health less likely. Microsoft’s campus is also very safe in many ways. Their internet and computers are on very secure networks, making it extremely hard for the company to be attacked by any external sources. Microsoft supplies top class protection for the computers in their offices to ensure the safety of their employees and possessions. Also, Microsoft promotes non-violent communication between their employees, specifically the leadership team. This will reduce the chance of any physical or verbal altercations between employees, especially because people on the leadership team are seen as an example to follow for lower level employees. Microsoft also wants to keep in mind the quality of their workplace, and how it will benefit their workers. The company aims to ensure a high quality-of-life for their employees. One example would be their family leave policy. This is for an employee who has to deal with family matters and won’t be able to attend work. Going more in depth, one of Microsoft’s family policies is a combination of two things for their maternity leave policy. “Microsoft’s (MSFT) new policy is a combination of eight weeks maternity disability leave and the 12 weeks paid parental leave…”(Kelly). To sum this up, if an employee can’t go to work because of a recent pregnancy, they can file for maternity leave and not have to come to work, but still get paid for twelve weeks.
