My Ultimate Birthday Surprise I had gone to spend the week with my cousin, Brandon, and his wife, Jennie the summer of my sixteenth birthday. I had no idea that Brandon had the most thoughtful and extravagant birthday gift I could ever imagine. Brandon had, without his wife’s knowledge, set up an appointment for Jennie and me to go skydiving. I had always wondered if I would ever have the courage to Jump out of an airplane at 13,000 feet in the air. Skydiving had always been a dream of mine. My dream was made a reality in the blistering summer of 2010.
My bags were packed and I was ready to spend the week with Brandon, who I have always thought of like a brother, and his wife, Jennie. It never occurred to me that Brandon had anything out of the ordinary planned for my birthday. I was mistaken. After Brandon picked me up from my house, he told me he had a special surprise waiting on me when we got back to his house. I was kind of skeptical because Brandon had never really gone out of his way to do anything for my birthday. When we got back to his house Jennie had dinner on the table and ready for us to sit down and eat.
After we finished dinner and dessert, Brandon handed me a pink envelope with my name written sloppily on the front. I knew almost immediately Jennie had not had anything to do with this gift. I assumed it was Just an ordinary birthday card from the local Walgreen with a small sum of cash. I ripped the envelope and one end and hastily pulled the card out. As I started reading the card, my eyes became broad and my heart started hammering with ecstasy. I Jumped out of my chair and ran over to Brandon to give him a hug. Jennie was in wonder.
All at once, it became obvious to me why Brandy’s messy scribble had been on the front of that envelope instead of Jennies careful, cursive handwriting. This was a surprise for both of us. Brandon handed Jennie a blue envelope with her name written on the front in the same untidy script that was on my envelope. As Jennie ripped the envelope at the end, the same as I had done mine, I could tell she was nervous and excited at the same time. She opened the card, read the piece of paper that matched mine, and let out a Joyous shriek. Skydiving was something she had also always wanted to try.
Brandon had planned this whole surprise himself, while managing to keep it hidden from Jennie. That night Jennie and I talked amongst ourselves trying to figure out how Brandon had managed to keep all this room her all this time, since he had never been good with keeping secrets or organizing special occasions. After some time, we gave up and accepted that maybe Brandon really could put together surprises by himself. It did not matter either way, in the next few days, we would be on our way to Jump out of a plane, and that’s all that really mattered at that moment.
We only had a couple days before our skydiving session. We researched statistics and watched videos with anticipation. The videos made us more excited. However, the statistics made us wary. We watched hundreds of videos of people Jumping out of airplanes. We also read many circumstances where the adventures were not so and we prepared to wake up the next morning to Jump out of an airplane. Finally, after three long days, we headed for the airport. As we walked up to the gate, the man at the counter asked us for out ticket.
We handed him our slips of paper with a smile. He led us too room with what seemed like mountains of equipment. As we told him our sizes, he went to the appropriate pile and got what we needed. As I was putting my pack on, I started to get nervous. I knew this was possibly a once in a lifetime experience, so I bit my tongue and put on my brave girl ace, but deep inside I knew anything could go wrong, and I would never get to see my sixteenth birthday. With all doubts aside, I stepped up the portable stairs to the airplane.
As the attendants helped secure Jennies and my stables, Brandon looked in the door and gave Jennie and me his one off kind smile. Jennie smiled back at him and then turned her head to me. I could see she was ready for this, and she could see that I was ready also. At that moment, my greatest adventure had begun. I could hear my ears popping as we reached higher altitude. It was strange, the Geiger we got into the sky, the more my nerves seemed to fade away. I knew there was no turning back now. The pilot turned around and gave the attendants a nod.
It was time to prepare us to Jump. Jennie was sitting closer to the door, so her attendant motioned for her to stand up. He strapped himself to her, as they do with armatures, and they started walking towards the opening door. Jennie turned around and gave me one last smile. As she Jumped, I became more eager than I have ever been in my conscience life. My attendant motioned for me to unfasten myself from the seat and stand up. My attendant went over my instructions one last time as he strapped himself to me. We headed towards the door, I looked down and all I could see was clouds.
I stepped out of the airplane at over 13,000 feet and I had never felt freer in my entire life. I literally felt like a bird soaring through the open sky. For Just one minute, the world was so unimportant and petite. The attendant pulled his cord as a signal for me to unleash my parachute. I came back to reality as my parachute fluttered into the sky above me. When I landed on the ground, my knees were weak and my heart was pounding, but somehow I was as tranquil as I could be. I met Jennie, and we walked to greet Brandon at the gate.
We exchanged experiences as we walked back to the truck. Skydiving was Just another experience to Jennie, but to me, it was so much more. Skydiving changed my life. It put me in a state of mind that I have yet to leave. Skydiving was the most life changing experience I have ever been through. It changed the person I was and how I looked at life. I honestly do not think I will ever be able to thank Brandon enough for his gift to me. In his eyes it was Just an extravagant birthday gift, but to me it was the best thing that could have happened to me.
