No Country For Old Men

Chirurgic is first seen when he gets arrested for killing a fourteen year old girl and from the start we see that he is very skilled criminal when he chokes the police officer and escapes from holding. Chirurgic then proceeds to kill anyone that stands in his way even if it is not necessary, on his way to finding the money and Moss. The audience sees Chigger’s character come out many times throughout the movie in many different ways. The movie is about Chirurgic chasing Moss to get the drug money back from Moss. Chirurgic is not really understood by the law enforcement, his victims, the audience or really anyone around him.

People struggle to understand his motives and how a human being could be so terrible. Hired by men to get the drug money back, Chirurgic shows his true self when he kills the group of Americans to search for the money on his own. He shows that even the people who are “on his side” are not safe from his dangerous cattle gun. Chirurgic has no friends and never will due to his violent and untrusting nature. This is only the beginning for him and his killings. After escaping from the police Chirurgic steals a cop car and pulls over a random man driving. Chirurgic instantly kills the man and steals his car.

The fact that he is killing random people shows that he is completely uncompensated and artless. Chigger’s most stand out quality is his manipulation. We see this multiple times as Chirurgic uses the coin to give his victims a chance to save themselves. The first time this is seen is when he goes to a gas station after stealing the car. The gas station attendant makes a comment about Chigger’s license plate, which for some reason sets him off. Chirurgic says to the gas station attendant, ‘What is the most that you have ever lost on a coin toss? The man starts to see where this is going and gets frantic and impatient. Chirurgic flips the coin before he answers and covers it up. The attendant still is not willing to respond and wants to know what he’s got to lose, Chirurgic tells him that he has everything to lose. Out of fear the attendant finally makes a call, and luckily it was the right one. Chirurgic then tells him to keep the quarter because it is now his “lucky quarter’. This is only the first time we see Chirurgic enjoying playing games with his victims. At the end of the movie we see Chirurgic playing the same game but this time with Carla Jean, Moss’ wife.

Chirurgic explains to Moss on the phone that either way e is going to die; however, he has a chance to save his wife. He tells Moss if he gets the money in his hands right now that Carla Jean can live. Moss rejects the agreement. Later, Carla Jean walks into the house and spots Chirurgic sitting in a chair, she sits down across from him and the game begins. He rubs it in her face that her husband has the opportunity to save her but chose not to. Carla Jean begins to get defensive saying that his ignorance has nothing to do with her innocence. She cries to him, “You don’t have to do this. And tells him, “the coin has no say in it. But Chirurgic made that promise to Moss that he would kill her and knowing Chirurgic he made the choice to end her life. We see him leave the scene with blood pooled on the ground and on the bottom of his shoes. Chirurgic likes to think of himself as the king of fate, he decides who dies, when and how. He has no emotion or heart for his victims whether there was a reason for the killing or not. The way Chirurgic kills with no guilt shows that he is a cruel human being. No audience member will ever understand his motives or his reasons behind the things he does.
