Hurst wants to show her audience the sufferings and mistreated of women and how they are unspeakable and it’s beyond our conception. Hurst depicts women not being able to express themselves freely because anything they say can be judged by others. For example, she describes man who believes that women who try into becoming successful are such a waste of time and foolish.
Even though a woman does become successful he considers it a joke because all women do is take credit for the men’s inventions. “American women, he contended, were destroyed by their brains…He felt it was a tragedy to look at American women, whom he thought the most beautiful and vivacious women on earth, and then think what little use they were as women” (16) This only establishes the fact that women are not allowed to even be smart because they would be looked at as foolish for even trying.
Women would never have the opportunity to prove men otherwise because men would always see them as people who try too hard to prove something they are not. Furthermore, Hurst continues the conversation with the man telling him “So you really feel that all women are numb, I see” (17) and he responds back saying “No not all women.Just those who think that they are the most intelligent, as a rule. And the Occidental men are stupid for letting you ruin yourselves and the men along with you. ” This man clearly has an issue with women being more intelligent than him. It shows that men would never let women be smarter than them because they would be judged for giving the women such abilities and the women would be mocked for even trying. However, it only shows how confusing men can be because he states that the only women who are dumb are those who insider themselves smart.
But later in the text all women are compared to donkeys and donkeys aren’t the smartest of all animals. Men see women as animals and not equal like them because they believe they are the superior gender. Its especially worse if women come from a non-wealthy background. She states: “This sex superiority is further complicated by class and color ratings. Of course all women are inferior to all men by God and law down there. But if women are wealthy, of good family and mulatto, she can overcome some of her drawbacks.
But if she is of no particular family, poor, black, she is in a bad way indeed in that man’s world. She had better pray to the Lord to turn her into a donkey and be done with the thing. It is assumed that God made poor black females for beast of burden… Let is just considered that God made two types of donkeys, one kind that can talk” (58). Hurst demonstrates the kind of disrespect women has to go through because men don’t believe that they are an equal. They are being compared to a donkey because they are saying that they can only be useful for their looks and thing more than that.
However, if women come from a wealthy background she won’t be treated as harshly as the poor women. From the perspective from a reader from the U. S not only the concept of being treated unequally and having no rights is unjustifiable but being compared to an animal and being only thought as a thing is unbelievable. From a young age girls are taught to be inferior to the male’s commands and feel oppressed. In particularly Hurst talks about the three legged horse even though it was not dangerous the young girls feared it while the boys did to feel any fear. “But the men looked at each other and laughed.
They denied that the Three-Leg Horse ever hurt anyone… All in all form what I heard, have the strong belief that the Three-Legged-Horse is a sex symbol and that the celebration of it is a fragment of some West African puberty ceremony for boys.
All the women feared it. They all had been told to fear it. But none of those men were afraid at These young girls are taught to fear something that is not even dangerous which is cruel because men enjoy the fear they see in these young girls. It makes them feel superior and strong to not even be afraid of the three legged horse. Moreover, the three legged horse is a celebration of boys becoming men which is another reason girls are taught to be afraid. They are taught that they would never be at the same level as men and they would always feel inferior to them.
Hurst in many occasions feels offended that there’s still men out in the world who has the mentality that women can’t be treated with the same level of respects as them. As a woman she feels it’s unfair because she knows what it like is to be blew to succeed and be recognized for the work she has done and worked hard for. These Caribbean women are not stay at home moms who clean and cook. They are women who do the same job as men do except they don’t get acknowledged that they can be like men. On page 59, Hurst state that women are not recognized for the work that they have been slaving for. They are hard working women who look “so wretched with their bare black feet all gnarled and distorted from walking barefoot over rocks. The nails on their big toes thickened like a hoof form a life time of knocking against stones.
They have to work hard for their money too and probably even work harder than men but no one seems to recognize it.Men are always saying that women may never be like them but they do the exact same things. Overall, Hurst in many circumstances shows the obstacles women face daily and what the life consists of for women in the Caribbean. She shows that life in the Caribbean isn’t easy because women are being treated as second class. They are taught from a young age to always be under the commands of the men and that if they dare to step up they would be addicted because they are never going to be seen nothing more than a simple women.Even though it’s unjustifiable that a person can even think this way, women have to suffer from this abuse every day. They would never be seen then nothing more.
Women are also compared to animals which is even more disrespectful because they are basically saying that they don’t need women and they would be able to manage without them. Yet, women do the same amount of work as they do and never receive any gratitude. It truly is shocking that theirs people who can think less of person based on their gender.
