s1 {font-kerning: none}span.Apple-tab-span {white-space:pre}Teresa ChouENGL 131 Y4Jan 19 2018SA #2Genre Analysis: Cartoon Cartoons are more effective for influencing people’s thinking than some long and wordy articles. Political cartoon is one of the more effective genre that not only easy to understand but also humorous. In the pictures below, the illustrators incorporate graphical details and four elements of satire, that is, exaggeration, reversal, incongruity, and parody, to convey how mainstream society would respond to the 2016 presidential election and leave further connotations that add satirical effects to the cartoons.  The first political cartoon example Trump was portrayed like a domineering gangster because the size of his head and cheeks make him look threatening and seemingly powerful.

Of course, Trump does not look like that in the reality even though he has his unique expression. The illustrator is trying to illustrate the expression and radical stance on most issue to the audiences. Comparing between the two characters, Clinton is wearing her iconic  suits and sits properly while Trump appears to be sloppy with his crookback and the flat long tie, which is allude to his unpretending disposition. Clinton looks more neat and formal and more like a typical politician than Trump.  Besides the appearance of two politicians, there are more elements that is contains sarcasm. The conspicuous sign behind the two says “unpopularity contest.” The word “unpopularity” is capitalized which explains that the competition between the two is like a joke to people who is watching.

The competition is usually striving to win the championship but this competition is a dishonorable rivalry. If we look closely, their eye contacts and sloping eyebrows shows that there are some hatred between them. Furthermore, it is obvious that no one would actually be willing to participate in this embarrassing competition. Therefore, the illustrator incorporated incongruity to make this caricature even more absurd and ironic, alluding that politicians are mostly blind in a way that ignores what people really need.  The second political cartoon example is “Trump at Odds.” It satires Trump’s frequent changing positions on many issues. The guy on the right use the word “they” to indicate the two Trumps hold different stances today and yesterday. The word “every” is bolded to  emphasize that this situation has occurred again and again.

When another guy ask Trump today or yesterday, it shows that Trump changes his decisions everyday. His alternating position has confused people as we see the expression of the guys on the left.  This cartoon exaggerates the sarcasm of Trump who holds contradicting positions which confused citizens. Although the word “every” doesn’t mean Trump switches his position on every issue, is means he changes frequently. Besides, the two gigantic Trumps are also satirical. While both Trumps look so confident and passionate, they are contradicting themselves on the same issue. The most sarcastic part is the illustrator made his drawing of Trump with really small eyes. It is true in real life but it could also means that Trump doesn’t care if his ideas on policies.

The third political cartoon example shows the agony, anger, and fear of the people using incongruity and exaggerations. The children surrounded by Trump may be the politicians in the SJW group or the Republican Party or citizens. Although people are  disappointed and anger about Trump’s victory, they did not sit on the ground and act like a baby crying and yelling over the election. The illustrator use sarcasm to express that those adults are acting crazy after knowing the news about Trump.  In the picture, Trump looks much larger and taller standing in the middle of the room. This shows that Trump has much power than anyone does in the Republican Party and other politicians could not fight against him but complaining.

Trump’s reaction in the picture symbolizes that he doesn’t care about people’s concerns and his indifference to some group of people such as the African Americans and feminists, which might be oppressed under his presidency.  In those examples of political cartoons, the illustrator depict those drawings with many details that indirectly reflects what is happening lately. Although it might have some small details that people didn’t know the exact meaning, it is more interesting than reading a bunch of words. This two-dimension illustration not only attractive but also a unique way to send messages to the audiences.
