Renaissance

Identify three features from the painting, and explain how each feature represents a significant change that took place during this period of history. Change 1. The painting itself focuses on realism. It depicted the everyday life as it looked. This reflects that Renaissance was more humanistic and less religious. If you kick at the Medieval art, you will find they were very focused on Christian concepts. During the late Middle Ages, people who survived wars and black death began to question the Church and its teaching.

The new, educated middle class emphasized more on the importance of individuals. Although Chi arch leaders were still important art patrons, wealthy merchants and families also spent huge amount of money on art, resulting in art works of humanism and realism. Change 2. The painting shows that people at that time began to buy silk, fine pottery wares and other luxury goods for themselves. After the plague, the left Europeans found themselves in more demand. They were better paid off and had better social status. Besides, many poor workers and peasants inherited a large amount of fortune and became the new middle class.

In the meanwhile, the Catholic Church suffered greatly from the lost of well- educated clerks. Thus the church was not respected as it had been before and people enjoyed more worldly pleasure than self-denial. They bought more luxury goods, fine arts and good music for themselves, rather than wore rough clothing and ate plain foods. Change 3. The painting also reflects the rise of the merchant class. You can tell that commerce in the town was very prosperous. As the power of the kings and nobles got softened after the black death, trading was not that limited.

The diddle-class population had more than enough money to meet their basic needs. As the spirit of Renaissance kept flourishing, they began to desire luxury goods, show off wealth, and even spend on art and entertainment. Their desires stimulated economy and trading. In a result, merchants, tradesmen, crafted workers became rich and had more money than basic needs. Under the influence of humanism, they spent more on additional goods and services to enjoy their earthly pleasure.

This in return increase the economy further more. The transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance was a sit from an agricultural to a merchant society. As the painting shows, merchants tended to grouped together to form “guilds”. Merchants within the guild, protect their own interest and rights as well as the well-being of the city. Besides, as important sponsors, they often support the advancement of arts or science.
