The asked his grandmother what he was supposed

The first artist I am going to be talking
about for inclusion to the book is James Turrell. James Turrell is an American
artist that works with light and space. His work has been talked about all over
the world with his new and innovative way he creates his pieces. Turrell uses
the light in his work to target the viewers perception of the piece, some say
it is like illusions. James Turrells work is more about the experience than the
actual piece itself. Turrell used to a pilot when he was in his younger age and
this got him fascinated in space and light, he mentioned on his website that he
considers the sky his equipment “Considers the sky his studio, material and
canvas.” In his early stages of working with light Turrell worked with
projectors that would form light into spaces, this would be his starting point
for his experimentation and developing his understanding of how it worked. He
found it fascinating how to vision would affect the brain. Turrell remembers
when he was around 5 or 6 years old his family sitting in a meeting around a
table while everyone was closing their eyes, as Turrell was young he didn’t
quite understand what was going on so he asked his grandmother what he was
supposed to do and she responded, “Just wait, we’re going inside to greet the
light.” This would be the starting point for his fascination with light from a
small saying from his grandmother. People who go and see his work get a better
experience than viewing an image or watching a video as it’s an experience you must
see yourself to understand and appreciate the way it works. The light Turrell
uses works well with spaces as if the space is just right he can use the light
and fill the room in it and make his art.

Turrells work is well known for many
reasons, such as publicity and the way he shows it off. He has had many
monumental pieces of work in his time but only a few really make an impact on
the art world we know today, for example the Roden Crater is one of the most
ambitious projects in history and other work like Afrum I (White) which is a
piece that really uses light and perception to trick the viewer into believing
what they see is one thing but when they look closer and in more detail, they
realise it is something completely different. Afrum I uses light that is
projected in a certain way onto and object to make the eye see a 3D image. From
pictures of this piece you will see what looks like a cube suspended in thin
air but if you were there and you looked around the image you would soon see
that it is not the case. The Roden Crater is very popular because it is what
James himself calls a “Naked eye telescope” How the crater works is quite
spectacular, it uses the space in the rooms and the lights from outside to
shine in and make many different effects and colours on the walls. The crater
also got some publicity from the famous singer Drake in the Hotline Bling music
video. In this video, it uses art like what you would see from James Turrell,
people who watch the video would get interested in this art they will look it
up and find work from Turrell. James Turrell believes art can be made from
things other than traditional objects and materials as he said on his website
“Art can be made of non-traditional materials and that can be made from an
experience other than a thing”.

Looking at this image here you can see that
there is not a lot going on, no movement and no life to be seen just an empty
land with a hill but when doing research, you will soon realise this is
something much more interesting and bigger. You could say this image shows how
Turrells likes to work with space and the amount of space that is in this
image. You could also say that the lighting is different on the mound than in
the sky or ground. The Image is of the Roden Crater which is an extinct volcano
that James Turrell purchased and made into his naked eye telescope, inside this
volcano there are rooms and walkways that lead to other rooms, it is quite
interesting. From the outside, it just looks like a normal hill but I believe
this image is good when thinking back on James Turrells work, he works on
perception and this is testing my perception of this image. I am seeing
something that looks boring and bland but I am not there to experience the
size, scale or adventure that is inside the crater. Also in this image, I
notice that you can hardly see what is in the background as it hazy and hard to
pick out objects or land. In the image, I can notice that there is a lot of sky
than an actual object, this may be connected to the space part of his work and
in this image, there is plenty of space above and around the crater. My
conclusion of this image is that it is a way to test the viewers thoughts and
feelings of something that looks boring on the outside but is amazing on the

The Second artist I am going to talk about
is Richard Serra an American minimalist sculptor that works with large scale
sculptures that are made from steel. Serra’s work is like work such as James
Turrells in the way their work is important with the experience than the
viewing. Serra’s work works both with physical and the experience. His work
focuses on the setting, location and experience for example the area where the
sculpture is placed must have been in the mind of the artist while or before
they made the piece. Serra got his experience of being able to weld from his
work in the steel mill at a young age, this can be what started him off on his
work making large art pieces that mean something more than what they appear,
this must have given him some skill and expertise on how to manipulate steel.
He has stated on the art story that his influences are Jasper John and Jackson
Pollock. Serra is well known for being one of the most influential artists of
the 20th century. His work wasn’t influenced by many things but he
got most of his experience from own training and own work. Serra said that he
makes sculpture’s instead of other things because putting it in an area will
make it stand out and grab attention “I attempt to use sculptural form to make
space distinct” I believe Serra’s art isn’t just the sculpture but in fact the
area around it and that makes the sculpture just an additional piece to the
scenery to maybe tell a story or meaning.

Richard Serra has many monumental pieces of
work in his time but one piece that stands out to has to be Tilted Arc which
was created in 1981. This piece is important because it was slightly
controversial with pedestrians and workers in the area it was located. The
location for this piece was in the middle of a few buildings. A few workers
didn’t appreciate this as it was too big and disrupting their travel to work.
These workers got a petition to move the piece somewhere else but Serra would
not let them do that because he said, “To remove the work is to destroy the
work”. This goes back to what Serra works for, his work isn’t just about the
piece it’s about the setting and location. This got a lot of people talking and
a lot of people defending Serra and therefore its monumental as it could have
inspired people to stand up for their work and not let people force them away.
Serra’s work is grand on a scale but that’s not why it’s so monumental and this
proves the point that big doesn’t always mean monumental. Serra has said that
everyday can be monumental and this itself as a saying can man a lot to a small
artist that is starting out and unable to create big piece to stand out. The
other big monumental piece is named The Matter of Time, this piece is made up
of multiple pieces that are combined to create and experience that forces the
viewer to explore and go through the piece.

In this image from Richard Serra you can
see lots of steel patterns bending and winding in a room. This piece is called
the matter of time and it is made up of several different pieces. When looking
at the piece from this angle you can see the piece looks just like random steel
placed in a room but I will never be able to understand the full piece as it is
more of an experience than an object. This piece is meant to make you go around
every piece of art in a way that it takes time to do which goes for the name
“Matter of time”. Also looking at this image it resembles a maze-like structure
that has tight areas to go in and exits and entrances. The colours make it
stand out as the steel is a rusted dark orange tint where the floor and walls
are very light white and grey. From the angle of the image it doesn’t look like
it is that big as there is no people to compare the sizes with. The circular
sculptures make you think if there you would go around the area and get lost. There
is not a lot you can say about this image as it doesn’t have any features that
stand out like patterns in the steel or steel that is made to look like an
object but it’s flat and smooth looking. All the pieces look the same and
nothing too different is in them but apparently, they are eight different
pieces. When looking at this image it reminds me of a painting, the way the
circles and the bending is made looks fluent like someone has taken a paint
brush and made waves.
