This quotation is from Holden’s conversation with Mr.
Spencer, his former history teacher, in chapter two. His former teacher is lecturing Holden about his failures at Pencey; at this point, he is referring to the importance of playing by the rules. Holden has failed most of his classes at his school, and is getting expelled for his failures. As Mr.
Spencer attempts to teach Holden the importance of applying himself, Holden simply ignores his advice and ridicules his teacher in his mind. He does not take criticism well, and refuses to improve. This is the opposite of most students because most students accept criticism to improve in a certain task. Here, we see how deeply his desire for independence is connected to his feeling of alienation, to the bitterness he has for the rest of the world.
Of course, Holden will not really shoot people in this hat, but it remains a symbol of his scorn for convention. It proves how much he despises regularity and that he is rebellious and will not conform to society’s norm. From Holden’s perspective anything said can be perceived as evil and horrible, as if there were no such thing as a hopeful wish. He is constantly negative, and simply refuses to believe that there is a possibility of a remark being genuine. This negativity also distinguishes him from most people, since most people prefer to have a positive mindset as to be happier in their lives.
He is an example of a non conformist that refuses to alter his actions, in hopes of becoming successful. Juno gets pregnant at a young age, not conforming to society’s tendency of using protection to avoid pregnancy. She can also be quite charming if the situation requires it. Her attitude hides an emotional side since she can be overwhelmed by emotions.
She is also prone to making rash decisions without thinking about the consequences of her actions.Even though Juno is a pregnant teen, she represents teen immaturity. Juno took the news of her pregnancy much easier than most girls would. Throughout the movie, Juno makes jokes and sarcastic statements to other characters regarding her pregnancy. She cannot take any situation seriously enough to be a responsible person.
