Understanding Populations

Density
Is the number of individuals per unit area of volume.
Population
All members of a species living in the same place at the same time.
Dispersion
It is the relative distribution or arrangement of its individuals within a given amount of space.
Growth Rate
The birth rate minus the death rate.
Reproductive Potential
Maximum number of offspring that each member of the population can produce.
Exponential Growth
They grow faster and faster.
Carrying Capacity
An ecosystem for a particular species is the maximum population that the ecosystem support indefinitely.
Niche
It includes a species physical home, the environmental factors necessary for the species survival, all the species interactions with organisms.
Parasitism
The relationship between the parasite and the host.
Mutualism
A close relationship between two species in which each species provides a benefit to the other.
Commensalism
A relationship in which one species benefits and the other species is neither harmed nor helped.
