Walking into this project I had no idea what advertising to minorities was, and I had no interest in finding out. What is a minority group? A Minority group is a relatively small group of people, especially one commonly discriminated against in a community, society, or nation, different from others in race, religion, language, or political persuasion. The main minority groups in the U.S. include African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Jews and American Indians, all culturally or racially distinctive groups that represent a comparatively small percentage of the population. Advertisers can differentiate which minority groups are watching a certain channel or show and make an assumption on what they are going to want to buy. For example shows heavily watched by African Americans may have a lot of junk food advertisements. This isn’t just a coincidence advertisers strategically pick which T.V. channels to advertise a certain product on. This can do a lot more harm than you may think. Going back to the example of African American shows and junk food, the food advertised in these commercials is not good for you and when you advertise it to a certain race it can influence them to make unhealthy. The positive effects of advertising to minorities include, spending less money on advertising to every channel when you make the most money on a certain one which is heavily watched by a certain minority group. Also it helps the consumer get ads on products they’re interested in. Some negative effects of advertising to minorities are that it can make the consumer uncomfortable, and it can create prejudice and support racial profiling. Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge. In other words project based learning or PBL is a way for students to get a deeper understanding of the topic they are learning through a project, rather than a teacher telling them. I enjoy project based learning more than regular learning because I believe I learn better/understand the information more. For this project we split into groups of three, and then drew cards for our topic and the order we would present, from there we created a way to present our topic to the class in a way that would keep them engaged through the class period like the teacher typically would. Each group in the class presented and taught us about their topic with activities along the way to help us understand and keep us engaged. Some activities we did were things like splitting the classroom in half depending on our opinion, and debating the side of said opinion. I learned about many topics that other people were assigned, including the advertisement of guns, sexual advertisements, government regulation vs. self regulation, and the advertisement of lottery tickets. The subject I found most interesting was self regulation vs. government regulation because, I had not heard of it before. I find it interesting that in some countries they have a choice on things like the hours they are required to go to school, how fast they drive. My opinion is that the government should control a lot of things we do based on votes. I also liked talking about gun advertisements, because surprisingly a lot of people in the classroom were pro guns and the advertisement of them. One of the example advertisements was a little boy scaring off a robber who was at his window, with a toy gun. Nonetheless they were selling that particular toy gun. It was unbelievable to me that they would target a child in a advertisement like that, but it was very interesting and I will most likely be reading more about lots of these topics In conclusion I believe that this has been a great project and is beneficial. I’ve learned so much about many different advertisements. PBL is one of my favorite learning techniques. I hope you enjoyed learning about my project. And I enjoyed sharing.
